How to Know If Your Child Might Need Eyeglasses

If you notice that your child has a hard time concentrating on schoolwork or frequently squints or covers one eye, he or she may be indicating the need for glasses. It’s a good idea to know the signs of an undetected vision problem early on since healthy eyesight is so crucial to your child’s growth and development. By scheduling a comprehensive eye exam to determine if your child needs glasses, you are promoting their success in learning as well as helping them realize the importance of healthy eyesight for life.

1. Squinting or Covering One Eye

By squinting or covering an eye, your child may be trying to temporarily improve focus and clarity of an object. This could be a signal of a refractive error, meaning the shape of the eye does not bend light correctly, resulting in blurred vision.

2. Sitting Too Close to the TV or Hand-Held Devices

If your child holds objects too close to their face or sits too close to the television, this may indicate a sign of nearsightedness, as being closer to objects make it easier to concentrate on them.

Frequent tripping or bumping into objects could be a sign that your child has difficulty with depth perception, which means they could have an eyesight problem.

While it is important to have your child visit an optometrist to determine if they need glasses, other eye conditions like cataracts and glaucoma can also be detected during an eye exam. Having your child’s eyes cared for by a trusted optometrist is essential to their eye health and development as they grow and learn.
